We cannot think of a more grandiose way to start the pro-cycling season than to absorb the electric atmosphere on the side lines of Paris-Roubaix or the Tour of Flanders. In fact, we are such massive fans of eating dust – or on the rainy years – splats of mud, from the side-lines that we created our Cobbled Classics trip that covers both monumental weekends and the cheeky mid-week Scheldeprijs.
These legendary roads have made many a good rider lose control. One thing is for sure, you can never expect the ride to be smooth or predictable, after all, this is where many pros end up with the dreaded DNF next to their name on the final results sheet.
For the pros who have struck a bargain with lady luck, they will put on a bone-shaking show for you like no other. Like a stampede of wildebeest, the rumble of tyres hitting the jagged cobblestones, will give you the most exhilarating and memorable rush of your life. The look of sheer determination, and perhaps a little fear, struck across the riders faces reminds you of the prowess and control these riders have on their bike.
Last year our guests on the Paris-Roubaix watched from the best vantage point, and witnessed, before their very eyes, Cancellara breakaway from the pack. By pure chance, we got right into the race action, with the pros racing alongside the La Fuga support van (part of the course runs parallel to the motorway). Our spies tell us that some of our guests turned into excitable children and were bouncing up and down in the back, screaming with sheer delight!
Another major highlight, for those who left their lives at the door for a week and gave in to the madness of the cobbles on our Cobbled Classics Week, was to see Cancellara speak about his Tour of Flanders victory and his preparations for Paris Roubaix. And, with the course at Flanders having been altered this year, guests will be privy to seeing the pros lap around three times, creating even more opportunities to urge your favourite pro on as he rides past!
The only thing that could be more thrilling than watching these historic races for yourself, is riding the very same roads. There is nothing like testing your strength, both mental and physical, and riding skill on the savage pavé cobbles which feature in the Spring Classics. These are the “hardmen” races of the sportive world, and boy, they really pack a punch. This is physical combat in its most life affirming guise.
Join us in the unforgettable madness, know that you tamed the same cobbles as the pros.
