"Extraordinary biking, perfect weather, outstanding support from the Fuga team, I was greatly impressed by the team spirit, the cohesiveness of strangers to accomplish a common goal, and as Fuga promotes, an ethos that characterizes the spirit of the Raid."

Tuscany in the autumn is a very special place, and very much where the soul of La Fuga resides. The day time temperatures generally settle in the high 20's (°C) before cooling to pleasant, balmy evenings. The smell of wood fires drift through the evening air, along with the calm seasonal smells of the Tuscan countryside as cyclists put their feet up after a long day in the saddle. At absolute classic La Fuga tour, the Tuscan Raid epitomises so much of what we are so passionate about.

"La Fuga set the benchmark for cycling touring, superb customer care, expert safety, iconic routes, and fantastic carefully chosen hotels and restaurants. Nothing is ever too much trouble and they are also great guys."

Taking in classic routes, designed by La Fuga, our Tuscan Raid has been planned to take in some of the best riding available in the region. Along our journey we will visit some iconic Tuscan towns such as Volterra, as well as some of the strade bianche - white gravel roads - featured in the popular L'Eroica sportive as well as tackle the classic climbs of Monte San Savino, Monte Luco and San Baronto.

The evenings will be spent chatting over the day's adventures with your fellow riders and sampling the delicious local cuisine and wine.

We'll be staying two nights at Hotel Villa La Principessa situated in the foothills of Lucca and two nights at My One Hotel offering fantastic views over Radda and the Chianti countryside.

Along the way, you’ll be treated to some of the best hospitality we can offer, with all four nights being spent at 4-star hotels, dinners at some of our favourite restaurants and our own great La Fuga support on every ride, providing all nutrition and mechanical requirements, plus anything else we can offer – the follow van is always right there, so all you need to focus on is enjoying the ride.

Bike Hire

Thursday 8 Oct – ARRIVAL DAY

La Fuga will run an airport pickup from Pisa airport. Details on transfer times to be announced in October 2015.

Arrive into Pisa airport for a short transfer (about 25minutes) to our first hotel – Hotel Palazzo Alexander in the centre of Lucca. Once checked into the hotel our mechanic will build your bike ready for the following three days of riding.

Depending on flight times it may be possible to do a short ride to test the legs out and make sure bikes are set up correctly. An excellent ride up the nearby Monte Serra is recommended. This is where all the local pros used to test themselves in preparation for big races – a trend set by Bjarne Riis while he directed Team CSC.

Dinner tonight will be in the excellent hotel restaurant.

Friday 9 October – Day 1
Ride: Lucca to Radda – Distance 120km – Ascent 1300m

Day one will take us South East from Lucca, through rolling hills and amazing ancient towns towards Radda. Our day will start off very steady with some flat terrain out of Lucca as we trace the side of Monte Serra.

The roads are immediately idyllic and the group has chance to chat and get to know each other before the road starts to rise. We hit some rolling terrain after around 20km and start a steady ride up to San Gimignano – famous for its multitude of towers built by merchants to demonstrate wealth. We may stop for a quick coffee in San Gimignano and take in the atmosphere of the town.

We then decent down into Colle Val d’Elsa before making a long steady climb up to Radda. Our stop for the night is just on the outskirts of Radda and has great views over the town and the countryside. Our restaurant for this evening serves the most amazing Tuscan cuisine.

We arrive at our hotel in Radda with time to freshen up before heading out to a local restaurant for dinner.

Saturday 10 October – Day 2
Ride: Radda to Radda – Distance 125km – Ascent 1900m

Our second day riding will feature some of the Strade Bianca – famous in this area from the L’Eroica cyclosportive that recreates the heroic rides of cycling’s golden era – with the added comfort and convenience of starting and finishing at the same hotel.

We leave Radda and ride towards Gaiole, another famous Chianti town. We take in the first section of ‘strada bianca’ from the Eroica sportive. A very well surfaced section so no need to worry. This section is actually candlelit during the event due to the very early start by some riders. We then wind out way across the countryside before climbing the challenging climb of Monte Luco. A fast, well surfaced descent follows. Lunch will be had en route after the descent.

To ease you back onto the bike we restart with a flat, fast section before climbing Monte San Savino using a quiet back route.

Reward once again is a well surfaced, safe descent. The rest of the day undulates our way back to Radda, throwing in some ‘strade bianche’ sections to keep you on your toes.

Some relaxation in the hotel pool and spa before dinner is a must on this end of season wind-down. Dinner will be had at another local restaurant.

Sunday 11 October – Day 3
Ride: Radda to Lucca – Distance 140km – Ascent 1000m

Our third day returns us to Lucca. We visit some famous roads used by Tuscan professional riders with San Baronto our final challenge of the weekend.

Our ride starts with a climb directly out of the hotel but once safely past Castellina in Chianti our general trend is down. Our route is lined with vineyards for the first half of the day. We have chosen a few challenging climbs to get you some elevation after a very easy start.

San Baronto is used by virtually every Tuscan based professional rider and by the myriad of amateur teams and races too. Mark Cavendish lives nearby along with many English speaking professionals which shows how idyllic this areas is for training. Our approach to San Baronto is from Vinci, famous for a certain ‘Leonardo’ who was from Vinci – Leonardo da Vinci.

After a nice descent into Lamporecchio we’ll enjoy some fast riding all the way to Lucca where a beer or glass of Chianti awaits a toast of a great weekend of riding. Dinner will be taken at a restaurant in the town.

Monday 12 October – DEPARTURE DAY
You can relax and enjoy one last breakfast in Tuscany and reflect on a great few days of rising. Your La Fuga mechanic would have packed your bike ready for the journey home. There will be a shuttle transfer back to Pisa Airport in time for your flight.

In Radda we will be staying at My One Hotel.

Two days will be spent at this hotel offering great views over Radda and the Chianti countryside. The outdoor pool maybe a good way to sooth tired muscles, although the temperature will not be comparable to the thermal waters of San Giuliano. A relaxing glass of Chianti before dinner or maybe a massage, provide a great way to relax after the days riding.
